About chiropractic

What is chiropractic?

The philosophy, art and science of how your brain talks to the rest of you, and what happens when that conversation gets interrupted.

Philosophy, art and science

Your spine carries the messages.

Chiropractic describes the communication between the brain and the tissues, organs and systems of the body. The brain controls and coordinates every action of the body, and its messages travel down the spinal cord and out along the nerves.

If that communication is interrupted by a pinched nerve or a vertebral subluxation, we may feel pain, stiffness, burning, stabbing, throbbing, tingling or numbness, to name a few.

A subluxation is a stuck vertebra (a backbone), or one that isn’t moving the way it should, which can pinch the delicate nerves of the back. Chiropractors adjust these vertebrae to restore normal motion and take the pressure off the nerves: less pain, and your health restored.

The brain sends messages down the spinal cord and out along a nerve to the hand. A stuck vertebra can pinch the nerve and garble the message.

Clear line. Your brain and body are talking normally.

The brain controls and coordinates every action of the body, by messages that travel down the spinal cord and out along the nerves.

What an adjustment does

Find it. Free it. Feel it.

  1. Find it

A complete chiropractic evaluation looks for vertebrae that are stuck or not moving well.

  2. Free it

A precise adjustment restores normal motion to the joint.

  3. Feel it

With the pressure off the nerve, pain eases and the body can work the way it’s built to.

The ancient history

Older than the temples.

The story begins with the Greek physician Hippocrates, who wrote about adjusting the neck to relieve symptoms in the neck and hand. In ancient China and the Roman Empire, “bone setters” worked on the battlefield, keeping soldiers moving.

In 1895, in Davenport, Iowa, Dr. Daniel David Palmer was studying how the anatomy and nerves of the spine relate to the rest of the body. He adjusted his first patient, a janitor named Harvey Lillard who had lost much of his hearing, by adjusting the vertebrae in his neck. As the story is told, Mr. Lillard’s hearing improved, and the chiropractic profession began.
